Students are encouraged to apply for up to three of the TMS scholarships described below.
J. Keith Brimacombe Presidential Scholarship
MAXIMUM VALUE: $6,000
FUNDING BY: TMS Foundation
One $5,000 cash award scholarship is made to an undergraduate student majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or minerals processing/extraction programs. In addition, a travel stipend of $1,000 is available for the recipient to attend the TMS Annual Meeting, to formally receive the scholarship.
Light Metals Division Scholarship
MAXIMUM VALUE: $5,000+
FUNDING BY: TMS Light Metals Division
Three $4,000 cash award scholarships are available to undergraduate students majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on both traditional (aluminum, magnesium, beryllium, titanium, lithium, and other reactive metals) and emerging (composites, laminates, etc.) light metals. Additionally, the scholarship recipients will be given the opportunity of selecting up to $300 in Light Metals Division-sponsored conference proceedings or textbooks to be donated in the recipient’s name to his/her college or university library and up to $400 in books for the award recipient personally. As the award is preferably presented during the Light Metal Division luncheon at the TMS Annual Meeting, up to $600 in travel expenses is available.
Preference will be given to full-time undergraduate applicants in their junior or senior year and to individuals who have participated in a relevant industrial co-op program. The scholarship recipients will be known as LMD Scholars.
Structural Materials Division Scholarship
MAXIMUM VALUE: $3,000
FUNDING BY: TMS Structural Materials Division
Two $2,500 scholarships are available to undergraduate students majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on the science and engineering of load-bearing materials, including studies into the nature of a material's physical properties based upon its microstructure and operating environment. The award is presented at the TMS Annual Meeting, and up to $500 is available for the recipient's travel expenses.
Preference will be given to full-time undergraduate applicants in their senior year. The scholarship recipients will be known as the SMD Scholar.
Extraction & Processing Division Scholarship
MAXIMUM VALUE: $2,500+
FUNDING BY: TMS Extraction & Processing Division
Four $2,000 cash award scholarships are available to undergraduate students majoring in the extraction and processing of minerals, metals, and materials. Scholarship recipients are also given the opportunity to select up to five Extraction & Processing Division-sponsored conference proceedings or textbooks to be donated in the recipient's name to the his/her college or university library. The award is presented during the Extraction & Processing Division Luncheon at the TMS Annual Meeting. As such, up to $500 for travel expenses to accept the award is available as well.
Preference will be given to full-time undergraduate applicants in the senior year. The scholarship recipients will be known as EPD Scholars.
Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division Gilbert Chin Scholarship
MAXIMUM VALUE: $2,500
FUNDING BY: TMS Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division
One $2,000 cash award is available to an undergraduate student studying subjects in relation to synthesis and processing, structure, properties, and performance of electronic, photonic, magnetic, and superconducting materials as well as materials used in packaging and interconnecting such materials in device structures. An additional $500 for travel expenses will be available to the recipient to personally accept the award at a TMS meeting.
Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants in their junior or senior year, enrolled full time in a program that includes the study of electronic materials. The scholarship recipient will be known as the EMPMD Gilbert Chin Scholar.
International Symposium on Superalloys Scholarship
MAXIMUM VALUE: $2,000
FUNDING BY: Organizing Committee of the International Symposium on Superalloys
Two $2,000 cash award scholarships with up to $500 in travel reimbursements, are available to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on all aspects of the high-temperature, high-performance materials used in the gas turbine industry and all other application. The award is presented in conjunction with the TMS Fall Meeting.
The recipients are chosen not only by a specially appointed selection committee of the TMS Student Affairs Committee, but by the International Symposium on Superalloys Organizing Committee as well. Preference will be given to students pursuing a curriculum/career in superalloys.
Judging Criteria
Scholarship recipients are chosen by specially appointed selection committees of the TMS Student Affairs Committee. The following judging criteria are employed:

* Activities in and out of School, Including Work Experience
* Leadership
* Personal Profile Statement
* Letters of Recommendation
Eligibility Requirements
* The applicant must be a member of the Material Advantage student program. (A student membership application may accompany the scholarship application.)
* Applicants must be enrolled full time in a metallurgical/materials science engineering program at a qualified college or university.
* Relatives of members of the TMS Student Affairs Committee or of the funding committee/division are not eligible.
* Additional eligibility requirements are included within the scholarship descriptions.
Submission Guidelines
* Applications for TMS scholarships are to be made by the students themselves.
* Applicants must submit their typed information on the official TMS Scholarship Application Form.
* Photocopies of the official Scholarship Forms may be reproduced locally.
* In addition to information requested on the Scholarship Form, applicants must attach an individual statement of 200 words or less, typed, double-spaced, describing career plans, reports on special projects, leadership roles, work experience, and community involvement. This is an opportunity for the applicant to convey specific career plans relating to a particular area of interest.
* Evidence of academic achievement (including rank in class) is an important factor; therefore, a transcript or facsimile of recent academic record and current GPA is required.
* Applications should include three official Recommendation Forms from educators or employers.
* Applicants may apply for up to three of the six scholarship programs. This must be indicated at the bottom of the Scholarship Application Form.

ACerS Electronics Division Hoffman Scholarship
The Hoffman Scholarship is an undergraduate tuition scholarship in memory of Dr. Lewis C. Hoffman, former chair and trustee of the Electronics Division, a Dupont Fellow and one of the pioneers in the incorporation of ceramics/glass science and engineering in the area of thick film microelectronic circuits technology.
The award consists of $2000 plus a memorial plaque, to be given at the annual meeting of The American Ceramic Society.

* Total GPA, Science Course GPA
* PSAT/SAT/ACT Scores, if available
* Faculty Advisor Recommendation Letter
* Extracurricular Activities
* An essay of 500 words on a particular topic

ACerS Pittsburgh Section J. Earl Frazier Memorial Scholarship
Awarded annually to a Junior enrolled in an accredited college or university working toward a degree in ceramic engineering, ceramic science, or materials science with a ceramic option. Applicants home residence must be within the geographical confines of the Pittsburgh Section (certain counties from Pennsylvania, Ohio, or West Virginia).
There are two main considerations in the selection of the recipient. They are academic proficiency and financial need, with both parameters given equal weight in the Committee's decision. The scholarship is awarded at a minimum of $3,000 on a single grant basis, and is used to defray expenses during the recipient's senior year. George A. Roberts Scholarships
Seven scholarships at $6,000 each. Established in 1995 through a generous contribution by Dr. George A. Roberts, Past President of ASM and Retired CEO of Teledyne, as an expression of his commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community.
William Park Woodside Founder's Scholarship
One year full tuition of up to $10,000. Established in 1996 by Mrs. Sue Woodside Shulec in honor of her grandfather, William Park Woodside, a man whose vision and leadership evolved into the founding of ASM International.
Nicholas J. Grant Scholarship
One year full tuition. Established in 1990 by one of Dr. Grant's former students, Dr. Joseph R. Lane. Created to honor Dr. Grant and recognize students who have excelled in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service.
ASM Outstanding Scholars Awards
Three awards at $2,000 each, to recognize distinguished scholars. (These scholarship awards are open to international student members)
Edward J. Dulis Scholarship
One award at $1,500. Established in 2003 by the family of Edward J. Dulis, who was a Fellow of ASM International.
John M. Haniak Scholarship
One award at $1,500. Established in 2003 by the family of John Myron Haniak, who was a life long dedicated member of ASM International.
